The Truth About Greyhounds Part I

The Truth About Greyhounds Part II

Your Questions, Answered

Why Do the Dogs Wear Muzzles?

Plastic basket muzzles are worn as a safety precaution during turnouts. Greyhounds are thin-skinned, so normal, mouthy play can easily result in injury. The dogs are able to drink, bark and fully open their mouths while wearing one.

During a race, Greyhounds wear a different muzzle, but for the same reasons. The white front of a racing muzzle helps determine the winner of the race.

How Often Are Dogs Let Outside?

Greyhounds go outside an average of five times per day; males and females are separated. Each turnout is approx. 30-90 minutes, with weather taken into account. Most Greyhounds don't like hot, cold, or rain, so on days with bad weather, turnouts are shorter and Greyhounds are only too happy to go back inside.

Of course, Greyhounds leave their crates many other times- racing, grooming, rub downs, taking a dip in the whirlpool if the kennel has one, walking, sprinting and individual/small group attention.

Do They Get Treats? Toys?

Yes! Popular treats are marshmallows, Milkbones, shank bones and other sweets. Toys are never left in the turnout pen because a large group of dogs with an interest in a single toy could cause a disagreement. One might be surprised to learn that their adopted Greyhound has a very diverse palate; Peaches, strawberries, blueberries, bananas, spinach, collard greens, baked potatoes and applesauce are some tasty toppers to the racing Greyhound's high carb, high protein diet.

I Heard That Greyhounds Couldn't Turn Around In Their Crates?

Unfortunately there are vast amounts of misinformation out there and this is one of the biggest offenders. Greyhounds can most certainly move freely about their crates, which are usually filled with shredded paper bedding or carpet squares for efficient, daily cleaning. Greyhounds will move their bedding around to suit their preferences, and their 15-18 hour-per-day appetite for sleep.

Why Are Greyhounds Kept So Skinny?

Greyhounds have a naturally slim physique with large, defined muscles. The breed ranges in weight from 50-90lbs. Many people see them as "too skinny" because they are accustomed  to other dog breeds, however, the top of  a fit, healthy Greyhound's hips will be visible as well as a few of the ribs. A fat Greyhound is not a healthy Greyhound! Many vets now point to evidence that a slightly overweight animal is more at risk for health problems than one in optimal condition (racing Greyhounds) or one who is severely obese. Just like humans, excess weight can cause musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary and quality of life issues.

Are Greyhounds Forced to Run? How Often Do They Race?

Greyhounds love to run. If they don't feel like it, they won't. There is nothing you can do about this, it is part of their charm. Greyhounds race 1-2x  per week, and come off the track satisfied whether finishing first or eighth.

Jeff Visits Derby Lane at Breakfast Time

Jeff visits another kennel at another track, and finds out what's for breakfast. Each kennel uses about 90 lbs of meat, frozen until use, then kibble, pasta, vitamins, and vegetables every day.

Food is measured for each dog by size and metabolism- they eat between 2-3 lbs of food per day!

And old, but fun video from Abernathy Kennels.
